Moon
cake story
The Moon
cake originated when China was under the rule of Mongolia. At the end of their regime, the
empire was very corrupted. The ruler was living an extravagant life while their people
were suffering. During the collapse of the economy, there were some activists urging for
reform. A revolution was planned. However, because of the repressive surveillance from the
Mongolian government, messages from the rebels could not spread. Finally one activist
introduced a new food item known as the "moon cake", claiming that eating it
during the Moon Festival would mean protection from the epidemic and survival of the
crisis. On the Moon Festival, when families cut the moon cake together, they found a slip
of paper inside the cake, 'Slay the Tatar on the 15th of the Eigth Month.' As a result,
all the people revolted against the Mongolian rule and the moon cake became one of the
traditional food items in the Moon Festival.
